Vacations are always enjoyed by people as this is the time when working class citizens spend time with their family and loved ones. Hence, there's a bustle to pack excitement to all holidays. Being on holidays employees can simply lose motivation and focus. While looking it from the business prospect, productivity is sure to suffer.

There is a lot that can be done for keeping the staff motivated and working, even towards year ending goals, starting from late November to early January. Employers and managers just need to implement a few easy solutions to keep the zeal on top even during holiday times.

First of all, let your employees enjoy their holidays

While managing a business, it might be difficult for two employees to take the same day off. The workplace might be closed on Christmas, but it wouldn't be closed for four days in a row. So the best thing to do while managing a holiday crises would be to not interfere with the employees. So if you're looking out for your team to provide 100% output while missing on the valuable time with their families, you have to make it clear that you respect their work with equal value.

Little or no holidays during the holiday season would only result in relentless staff that would most likely lose motivation for staying productive in the workplace. Rather than pulling in long term work hours, it's better to start discussing how much time can be taken off by them. Also, it's much better to make a systematic arrangement for holidays and setting a separate order for popular holidays.

Recognize employees with gifts and thank you notes

According to Eric Mosley, CEO, Globoforce "The power of simple word thanks often gets unnoticed in the office culture." Employees who are thanked for a well-executed job get inspired and motivated for doing great work, they remain focused and continuously driven towards meeting job-specific goals. Further, they also remain happier and committed to their employer. According to 96 percent of the employees, being recognized lets them remain motivated towards the job.

Whether you've gifted your staff the most beautiful faux boxwood hedge for home decoration or offered them a dinner voucher to their favorite restaurant, eventually all are bound to bring in inordinate outcomes. Combine meaningful performance reward with recognition and the emotional link between the employer and the staff becomes much enhanced, thereby increasing productivity.

According to Kara Simon, general manager, 3 Cheers Recognition and Recognition "Providing your employees with handwritten appreciation notes will always bring in positivity." Reading the appreciation note would drive the employee to put in more efforts and achieve higher targets within fewer time periods.

Let the employees celebrate

Supporting company employees for holiday celebration at work surely boosts staff morale and also further motivates them to achieve more. Another beautiful idea would be to decorate common areas and individual workspaces with artificial floral arrangements or organizing holiday gathering for keeping the drive high. Organizing corporate entertainment would be a great idea in motivating the workforce.

Among the best times to show your appreciation to the employees is the holiday season. Organizing the last day meeting for reviewing year achievements and discussing the goals for the upcoming year would be a great way to create motivation among employees. Consider organizing an off-site excursion to create a strategic planning and team building amongst employees.

Employers must understand the fact that the staff would more likely get exhausted and stressed out with the onset of holidays. It's better to accept that a little breathing room or a little time off would be required for the same. By being flexible on time, it's better to treat your employees like adults. As long as the workplace is kept productive, the company would keep getting better productivity even at the time of holidays.

Other incentives to employees

The benefits of this measure can't be overlooked, especially when it becomes available for free! Holiday offs are the right time when organizations can showcase that they care about their employees. And one method of doing this would be to provide perks like office food. According to the 2014 Seamless Corporate Accounts Food in the Workplace Survey, it was found that around 57 percent of respondents told that food-based perks made them more appreciated and valued by their employers, and 50 percent stated food available from the office also brings in more work satisfaction.

Other than food employers can also consider benefits of meditation and yoga. During holidays, when the stress levels are at peak, the need to de-stress becomes vital. Thus hiring a yoga/meditation specialist proves helpful in bringing in more productivity.

Additionally, you can also provide your staff with flexible working hours as it's linked to bringing in better outcomes. This measure tends to work well at the onset of the holiday season when the staff is usually busy. Everyone knows that "command and control" do not remain effective management styles within the workplace. It's good to know the season and stop fighting it!

Create the atmosphere of festivities

For many franchises, specifically restaurant and retail franchises, decorations for the festive season remain essential for creating an atmosphere for festivities conducive to holiday shopping. However, by incorporating a little bit of holiday joy would also help in lifting spirits of the franchise employees. Simple ideas to change the environment would be:

  • Putting up fake plant Christmas tree
  • Providing festival hats to employees
  • Playing light holiday music
  • Putting up chocolates or festive cookies jar

Consider that it's good, voluntary and tasteful! The main fix here would be to convert the place to bring in an inviting and warm environment. Employees should not feel that they are not participating under pressure.

Following a well-planned timetable for holidays would ensure that your staff isn't getting exhausted to the point where they might lose work interest. With work hour flexibility and added incentives, it becomes possible for employees to put in more effort for their work and become much more prolific in a workplace. In addition to holidays, these tips are sure to help in any season!
